Are Google’s AI Overviews reducing your organic traffic, or helping brand visibility indirectly?

2026-06-10 11:58:38 3 replies

Since the introduction of Google's AI Overviews, many website owners and SEO professionals have noticed changes in search performance. While some report a decline in organic clicks due to users getting answers directly in search results, others believe AI Overviews can increase brand exposure by featuring and citing authoritative sources.

What has been your experience so far? Have you seen a drop in organic traffic, changes in click-through rates, or shifts in keyword performance since AI Overviews became more prominent? On the other hand, have you noticed any indirect benefits such as increased brand awareness, higher-quality traffic, or more visibility in AI-generated responses?

I'm interested in hearing real-world observations, analytics insights, and opinions on whether AI Overviews are creating more challenges or opportunities for businesses and website owners.

Google’s AI Overviews can reduce organic traffic for some websites, but it depends on the type of content and search intent. I have noticed that for informational searches, users sometimes get answers directly from Google without clicking on websites. This can reduce clicks, especially for simple questions or basic guides.

At the same time, I also see it helping brand visibility indirectly. If my brand or website gets mentioned in AI Overviews, people start recognizing the name and may search for the business later or visit directly. For service based businesses, this visibility can build trust even if immediate traffic is lower.

Instead of only focusing on clicks, I look at whether my brand name searches, impressions, and leads are increasing. The real goal is not just traffic, but attracting the right audience and staying visible where users are searching.

Yes, Google’s AI Overviews are reducing organic traffic for many websites, but the impact varies significantly by industry, query type, and content quality.

From an SEO perspective, we are seeing the biggest decline in clicks for informational, top-of-funnel searches. Users can often get a quick answer directly from the AI Overview without visiting any website, resulting in lower click-through rates even when rankings remain unchanged. In some cases, websites ranking in the top three positions have reported noticeable traffic drops despite maintaining their visibility.

However, this doesn't mean SEO is becoming less important. What is changing is how success should be measured. Instead of focusing solely on rankings and traffic, businesses should also monitor:

    • Visibility within AI Overviews
    • Brand mentions and citations
    • Conversion rates from organic visitors
    • Engagement metrics
    • Search demand for branded terms

Based on what I have seen and honestly from my own behavior as a user, AI Overviews are not necessarily killing organic traffic, they are just changing how people interact with search results.

Most people now read the overview first. That is just the reality of how we use search today. Everyone is busy and no one wants to open five different tabs to find a straightforward answer. The overview handles that. But that does not mean the websites behind it become irrelevant.

If the overview is well written and covers the basics, a lot of people will move on. But if it sparks genuine interest or leaves something unanswered, people do click through. I do this myself. An overview that gives me enough context to want to know more will almost always get me to visit the actual page.

So for websites and businesses, the question is less about whether AI Overviews are reducing traffic and more about whether their content is interesting and valuable enough to make someone want to go further. Generic content that just answers a basic question will probably lose clicks to the overview. But content that has a clear point of view, specific detail, or something the overview cannot fully capture will still pull people in.

I think the opportunity here is to be the kind of source that gets cited in the overview in the first place. That is where the real visibility is, and that only comes from content that is genuinely authoritative and useful.
