Why a lot of UAE based websites suddenly lost organic traffic through SEO?

A lot of business owners and webmasters in Dubai and in the UAE are reporting that they lost a lot of organic traffic coming through SEO in the last several months. Is there any specific reason?

I have been professionally involved in SEO since the launch of my first website in 1999, so I have had the opportunity to watch search engines and SEO evolve through many major changes over the past 25+ years. I started working with search engines such as Yahoo, AltaVista, Google and MSN in the early days of SEO, and later managed SEO activities for more than 50 websites I owned while also helping many client websites through SpiderWorks Technologies.

With that experience, my first advice to UAE website owners who are currently seeing a sudden drop in organic traffic and rankings is simple: don't panic.

A ranking or traffic decline does not necessarily mean that you have done something wrong, particularly if you have been following ethical, white-hat SEO practices. Search is going through a particularly turbulent period right now, and fluctuations can happen even to websites that have followed sound SEO practices for many years.

One important thing I have learned from working in SEO for more than two decades is that search engine rankings are never completely static. Google continuously changes and refines its ranking systems. The way it interprets queries, evaluates content, determines relevance and presents search results can change significantly over time. In addition, AI-based search results are becoming increasingly important, which is changing the traditional relationship between rankings, impressions and website traffic.

In 2026, I am seeing mixed results from some of the SEO strategies that have worked reliably for many years. My own SEO activities have traditionally focused on content creation and quality backlink building through content marketing. These approaches worked very well for more than 25 years, but the current environment is considerably more volatile because of rapidly changing algorithms and the increasing importance of AI-based results in Google.

If your UAE websites are experiencing a sudden decline at roughly the same time, I would not immediately assume that all of those websites have suddenly developed SEO problems. It is quite possible that the fluctuations are related to broader changes in Google's systems or how search results are being generated and displayed. I myself am facing an SEO traffic drop for some of our websites focused on the UAE market and I am working on fixing the issues. I started seeing good results within a few weeks and I will share some of my successful strategies here.

I would still recommend doing some basic checks before simply waiting.

First, look at Google Search Console and your analytics data carefully. Determine whether the decline is in impressions, clicks, rankings, or all three. Also check whether the decline affects the entire website or only certain pages, topics, keywords or search queries. This can tell you whether you are dealing with a broad search-system fluctuation or a problem concentrated on specific areas of the website.

Second, rule out obvious technical problems. Make sure important pages are still accessible and indexable, the website has not developed widespread server errors, robots.txt has not accidentally blocked important sections, canonical tags have not been changed incorrectly, and important pages have not disappeared from Google's index.

Third, check whether anything significant changed on your website immediately before the traffic decline. Website redesigns, migrations, URL changes, major content removals or technical modifications can sometimes create ranking problems independently of an algorithmic change.

However, if you cannot identify a genuine technical or website-related problem, I would strongly recommend against making drastic changes simply because traffic has dropped for a short period.

Don't start deleting large amounts of content. Don't suddenly rewrite every page. Don't remove backlinks indiscriminately. Don't change your entire SEO strategy overnight. And don't assume that every ranking drop requires an immediate corrective action.

Instead, continue doing the fundamentals well. Keep producing useful and original content. Maintain the quality of your website. Improve pages where there is a genuine opportunity to provide more value to users. Continue building authority naturally through quality content and legitimate marketing activities.

Most importantly, give it some time.

SEO professionals sometimes make the mistake of reacting to every ranking movement. If rankings fall today, they make changes tomorrow, and when rankings change again a few days later, they make another set of changes. Eventually, nobody knows which change actually helped or hurt.

I prefer to look at longer-term trends. If the entire search environment is experiencing significant volatility, it is often better to observe what happens after things stabilise before making major strategic decisions.

Based on what I am seeing in 2026, SEO is currently going through a highly turbulent phase, but I expect things to become more stable.

So my recommendation to UAE businesses facing a sudden SEO traffic drop is: stay calm, investigate the obvious issues, monitor your Search Console and analytics data, continue following good SEO practices, and wait for the results to stabilize before making major changes.

If the decline remains after the current volatility has settled, then it is worth conducting a deeper analysis - looking at individual pages, queries, competitors, content quality, technical factors and changes in search intent. At that point, decisions should be based on evidence rather than fear.

After more than 25 years in SEO, I have seen the industry change many times. Search engines change, algorithms change, user behaviour changes and now AI is changing search itself. The websites that tend to survive these transitions are not necessarily those that react fastest to every fluctuation, but those that continue to focus on creating genuine value while adapting carefully when there is enough evidence to justify a change.

For now, my advice is simple: don't panic. Watch the data, keep doing the right things, and give the search ecosystem some time to settle down.

I will soon share an article explaining the strategies I used to recover SEO rankings and traffic for some of our UAE-focused websites. Also, if you have recovered rankings for your UAE websites, feel free to share your tips for the benefit of others who are watching this thread.

If you are a big fan of the Marvel movies, there is a point in almost every movie in the MCU where the rules of the universe change as new elements appear. The characters may be the same, but what worked in the previous movie no longer works quite the same way.

Something similar is happening in Google Search.

As an SEO Analyst working in Dubai, I've noticed that a number of UAE businesses I work with have noticed sharp changes in their organic traffic over the past several months. Some pages have lost rankings and some are getting impressions but fewer clicks. On the other hand, some pages appear to have disappeared from important search results altogether. In my experience, I can only say that there is rarely a single reason behind such changes. More often, they result from a combination of multiple developments that may be working together to influence these drops.

What has changed in Google Search?

Google's spam updates have been causing substantial ranking movement. During Google's August 2026 spam update, Search Engine Land's study found that 16.71% of URLs that had been ranking in Google's top 10 dropped beyond the top 100, compared with 9.2% during the comparison period. It is important to note that the study analyzed US search results, so these numbers should not be treated as UAE-specific. They do, however, show the scale of ranking volatility that websites were experiencing. Google has also released further spam updates, including the September 2026 spam update, which began rolling out on September 24 and applies globally.

Google can send fewer clicks even when your rankings have not collapsed

In this context of this question, AI search also takes a lot of precedence. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are changing what happens after someone searches. Google says AI Overviews now reach more than 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users. Google has also introduced reporting for generative AI traffic in Search Console, giving site owners more visibility into how their pages appear in AI-powered search experiences. (Google)

The practical problem is fairly simple. Someone searches for a question. Google provides a useful answer directly on the results page. The website may still appear as a source, and it may still rank well for related queries, but the person has less reason to click through.

Research published in 2026 has also reported that AI-generated search results can reduce clicks to publishers. At the same time, Google has said that overall organic click volumes remain relatively stable. The important point is that the effect varies by query, search format and website. So when a Dubai business says, "Our SEO traffic has suddenly fallen," the first question should not be, Which Google update hit us?

It should be: Did we lose rankings, or did Google simply send fewer clicks for the rankings we already have?

That distinction can completely change the diagnosis.

Why are UAE websites feeling this?

The UAE is an unusually digital market. DataReportal recorded 11.3 million internet users in the UAE at the end of 2025, representing 99% internet penetration. That makes Google search an important acquisition channel for businesses across sectors. (DataReportal)

For a UAE business, a traffic decline could therefore come from several places:

    • A Google algorithm or spam update changed rankings.
    • A competitor has replaced your page for important searches.
    • AI Overviews or AI Mode are answering queries that previously generated website clicks.
    • Search behaviour has changed.
    • Pages have become too similar, repetitive or generic.
    • Technical problems have affected crawling or indexing.
    • Search demand for particular services or topics has fallen.

AI-generated content is another piece of this puzzle. Google has repeatedly said that content created primarily to manipulate search rankings can violate its spam policies, regardless of whether humans or AI produced it. That makes large volumes of repetitive, low-value content a potential problem for websites that have relied heavily on publishing at scale. (Google Search Central)

So what should you do if traffic has fallen?

Don't immediately delete half the website or publish 50 new articles. I recommend opening Google Search Console and comparing the period before and after the decline. Focus on the clicks, impressions, average position and affected queries separately. If impressions and rankings have fallen, investigate algorithm changes, competitors, content quality and technical issues.

If impressions and rankings are relatively stable but clicks have fallen, look closely at the search results themselves. AI Overviews, featured snippets, ads and other SERP features may be taking more of the user's attention. If only certain pages have dropped, investigate those pages rather than treating the entire domain as a problem.

What I've understood is that visibility and traffic are no longer the same thing.

A website can be visible, indexed and even ranked reasonably well, yet receive fewer visits because Google is answering more of the search itself. That is why the recent UAE traffic drops need to be looked at carefully. There may be an algorithm problem, an AI search problem, a content problem, a technical problem or several of them happening together.

Before taking action, make sure that you find out which issue is causing the drop in your organic traffic.
